How to Choose the Right Apple Watch Band Size (38mm–49mm Guide)
Share
The wrong band size is the fastest way to ruin a luxury accessory. Here's how to get it right.
You've found the perfect Apple Watch band — the leather is immaculate, the print is bold, the craftsmanship is undeniable. Then it arrives and doesn't fit. It's a frustrating experience that's entirely avoidable. This guide covers everything you need to know about Apple Watch band sizing, from identifying your case size to finding the right wrist length.
Section 1 — Know Your Apple Watch Case Size
Every Apple Watch band is designed for a specific lug width, which is determined by your watch's case size in millimeters. Before you shop, you need to know your model.
How to find your Apple Watch case size: Go to Settings → General → About on your Apple Watch. The case size (e.g., 41mm, 45mm) will be listed there. Alternatively, check the back of your watch — the size is engraved on the case.
Quick reference by generation:
- Series 1–3: 38mm or 42mm
- Series 4–6, SE (1st gen): 40mm or 44mm
- Series 7–9, SE (2nd gen): 41mm or 45mm
- Ultra & Ultra 2: 49mm
Section 2 — Band Width vs Case Size
Apple Watch bands come in two lug widths. Getting this wrong means the band physically won't attach to your watch.
- Small lug (38/40/41mm cases): Use bands labeled for 38mm, 40mm, or 41mm — they're interchangeable.
- Large lug (42/44/45/49mm cases): Use bands labeled for 42mm, 44mm, 45mm, or 49mm — also interchangeable.
At Anaghe Atelier, all our bands are clearly labeled by compatible case size so there's no guesswork.
Section 3 — Wrist Circumference & Band Length
Beyond lug width, you need the band to actually wrap your wrist comfortably. Most bands come in S/M and M/L lengths.
How to measure your wrist: Use a soft measuring tape or a strip of paper wrapped around your wrist just below the wrist bone. Mark where it overlaps and measure the length.
- Under 165mm: S/M is typically the right fit
- 165mm–200mm: M/L works for most wrists in this range
- Over 200mm: Look for extended or adjustable bands
Note: leather bands conform to your wrist over time and may feel slightly stiffer at first compared to silicone — this is normal and part of the premium leather experience.
